Vernon
Smith (1894 - 1969)
Born in Cortland, New York, Vernon Smith studied at the New York School of
Fine and Applied Arts (now Parsons), before moving to Boston where he designed
theater sets. In 1921 he moved to the Cape Cod town of Orleans, where he spent
most of his career.
Smith was the District Supervisor of the Southeastern Massachusetts division
of the WPA and was one of the few artists selected to participate in the WPA's
Alaska Art Project in 1937. This experience inspired some of Smith's later
work which includes elements of Native Alaskan imagery.
Six woodcarvings were exhibited at his 1947 one-person exhibition at Kraushaar
Gallery in New York. With titles such as Sea Rhythm and Siren, the exhibited
woodcarvings were similar to Sea Forms in their reference to the sea.
